About Sonia Martin
Sonia Martin lives and works in London UK, and after completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art at City & Guilds Art School, she completed an MA in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. Her figurative images have been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; the London Original Print Fair, Somerset House; the Barbican; the Contemporary Art Society; the London Art Biennale; and the Bankside Gallery. She has been awarded artist residencies in Spain, India, Ireland, Bolivia and Mexico, and in 2017 she became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. In 2021 she was a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award, and a prize winner at the London Art Biennale, and in 2022 she was shortlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize. Her work is held in many private and public collections including University of the Arts, London; New Hall College Art Collection, Cambridge; ArtUK National Collection; Southampton City Art Gallery, Hampshire; Keate Family Arts Trust, Cambridge; Morley College Art Collection, London; Lady Margaret Hall College, Oxford; RE Diploma Collection; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Museo d’arte di Chianciano, Italy; and Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
Arising from her response to the past and to the present, Sonia Martin’s subjects are a merging of the here and now and the imagination, exploring themes of memory, mortality and freedom.
Of her work, Sonia Martin states:
“The world I create is from my observations, memory and
experiences. The figures inhabit inner and outer spaces, where understanding is intuitive and instinctual. In the work there is often an element of search – to question and transcend everyday assumptions”.
