About Sonia Martin

Following graduate and postgraduate studies in Fine Art, British artist Sonia Martin completed a Masters Degree in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, London. Her work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows including London Art Biennale; Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; London Original Print Fair; New Hall College, Cambridge;  the Barbican;  Lynn Painter Stainers Prize Exhibition;  Bankside Gallery;  Contemporary Art Society; Gallery Different; Dentons Art Prize.

Awards include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award; Tessa Sidey Purchase Prize; London Art Biennale Exhibition Award;  GX Gallery award; Winsor & Newton Watercolour Prize; Eaton Fund for Artists; and Oppenheim-John Downs Memorial Trust Award.  She has attended artist residencies in Spain, India, Ireland, Bolivia, and Mexico, and she is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. In 2022 she was shortlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize.

Sonia Martin’s work is held in public collections including University of the Arts, London;  Aberystwyth University Gallery and Museum, Wales; New Hall Art Collection, Cambridge; Southwark Art Collection, London;  Cork Printmakers, Ireland; Southampton City Art Gallery, Hampshire;  Chhaap Foundation, India;  Morley College, London;  Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford;  Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge;  Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Museo d’arte di Chianciano, Italy; and V&A Museum, London

Arising from her response to the past and to the present, her subjects are a merging of the here-and-now and the imagination.
